I miss Rockstar: Supernova

As I watched Adam Lambert sing “Born to Be Wild” last night on American Idol, I had a momentary flashback to another singing competition, Rockstar: Supernova. And I realized I miss it. I miss the rock songs, the lighting, the lack of ballads…
The contestants on Rockstar: Supernova and it’s predecessor Rockstar: INXS offered up songs from bands like Nirvana, The Rolling Stones, The Police, David Bowie, and Radiohead. Not only was the song selection excellent, the performances were very polished and the stage production was impressive. I began to wonder about the former contestants on the two Rockstar shows, and I wondered, Where are they now?

Looks like Toby “Whatevs” Rand is the lead vocalist for an Australian rock band, Juke Kartel. Their debut album, Nowhere Left to Hide was released in early April, and it was produced by Rick Parashar who has worked with Nickelback, Pearl Jam, and Bon Jovi.

And I found that one of my favorites, Dilana Robichaux, is still performing. Her new album Darklight may be released sometime in 2009. The album features No Doubt drummer Adrian Young and Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars.

Just to refresh your memory, here’s Dilana singing The Cranberries’ “Zombie”

And I am sorry to report that Rockstar Supernova is kaput—yes, that is the name of the band due to legal problems that went along with using just “Supernova.” Anyway, too bad for Lukas Rossi, the winner and frontman for the short-lived band (other members included Tommy Lee, Gilby Clarke, and Jason Newsted). So, now Rossi is venturing out on his own.

This is Rossi performing Radiohead’s “Creep” on the show.

And while he did not win the competition, my favorite performer from the first season, Rockstar: INXS, was Marty Casey. He is still touring and recording with his band Lovehammers. I was happy to find out that “Trees” still lives on!

Here’s Marty’s rendition of “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers.

Unfortunately, I do have some bad news to report, winner J.D. Fortune parted ways with INXS earlier this year. Seems he was not the perfect fit the band was looking for. This leads me to wonder if this qualifies as a Miss America Pageant “In the event the winner becomes unable to fulfill the duties…” scenario?? If so, Marty Casey, you’ve just been crowned.

Note to CBS: bring back Rockstar! (maybe just skip the whole “hey, you just won a band” part, which doesn’t seem to be working out so well).

yes please CBS bring back Rockstar! It was the greatest show ever, with the greatest house band ever. Another favorite of mine was Jordis Unga. Not sure what she’s up to these days. Thanks for letting me reminisce, sd.

  2. well, since you asked…Jordis Unga, a contestant from Rock Star: INXS is currently working on her debut CD, but a release date has yet to be set. You can listen to her songs at http://www.myspace.com/jordismusic
