Not Your Average Family Roadtrip
They say you can’t have it all, but musicians Jason Hammel and Kori Gardner, the founding members of Mates of State, have set out to prove otherwise. See, Hammel and Gardner are not just band mates, they are also husband and wife. And when the two decided to start a family four years ago, they chose neither to scrap the music nor send the kids to daycare. Instead, they decided they would bring the kids on the road for some quality family time. So now the couple tours all over the country with daughters, Magnolia, 4, and June, 10 months.
Hammel and Gardner know their situation is unique, and they have even decided to blog about it at Band on the Diaper Run. Last week I happened to catch a segment on ABC World News in which reporter Dan Harris profiled the touring family. The segment shows the daily routine of the family, from nightly baths to baby-sized pink headphones during sound checks. With the kids in tow, some things have definitely changed—like the band’s contract rider, which stipulates that venues must supply the band with baby food and a “surprise for a 4-year-old.” Lucky kid.
Watch the whole segment here on ABC News.
