Have Instruments, Will Play

11Nov08

Maybe they’re just killing time, or maybe this is what musicians do—they just play music anywhere. And now that everyone has a camera in their pocket, it’s easy to capture some impromptu jam sessions and share them with the world. Here are a few interesting ones I have seen.

Do not be fooled, this first one is not some crazy woman dancing around hoping for some spare change. It’s Swedish singer Lykke Li joined by some members of Bon Iver. When I first watched it I found it amusing, but then the song really grew on me and I ended up downloading the studio version. So beware, you may get hooked.

Lykke Li and Bon Iver – “Dance, Dance, Dance”

Amazingly this next band was able to pack itself into an elevator and play a song. Thankfully nobody appeared to suffer from a violin bow to the eye.

Arcade Fire – “Neon Bible”

So this is how I think the next video came into being: The members of Cold War Kids were on tour and their bus broke down. They were walking along the side of the road when lead singer Nathan Willett had a flash of songwriting inspiration. So, he went and knocked on the door of a nearby house, and he said “Hey, kids, you guys got a piano inside that we can use for a little while?”  And this is what happened…

This next video was actually shot and uploaded by Matt Pond PA last year as a preview of a song off their upcoming album. I guess they wanted to take care of leaking the songs themselves. Be advised, this is a very bare bones production. They spared every expense when shooting this.

And finally, here’s a good example of a heartfelt and intimate performance caught on camera. I’d like to take this time to personally thank Scott Avett, his camera, YouTube, the Internet, and my computer.
